Resources for Executors- Kaathy

As a former project manager and lover off all things organization, I am a big fan of products that help those not so naturally inclined in life’s most complex transitions. I love a good checklist and plan (as we learned in the last blog post about executor.org) and that is why I was thrilled to learn about Kaathy. Kaathy is a new service that helps families stay on track and organized during the chaotic time of planning a funeral. If you have ever been a part of the process of planning your loved one’s funeral, you know that there are many moving pieces and so many activities that need to happen in a very short amount of time.

This tool can be so helpful for families trying to simplify some of the worst days of their life. Read below to learn more about Kaathy!

• What is Kaathy and how does it help executors?  Kaathy is a central hub for funeral directors to oversee all of their families and know where each family stands in the planning process. We have created a communication platform that allows funeral directors to delegate tasks, share documents, and message each family their working with. We help funeral directors and families stay on the page to ensure nothing is dropped or forgotten about while making sure each family is progressing forward.
• Why did you start it? I started Kaathy after my aunt Cathy passed away in the fall of 2017. I saw a massive gap for improvement in communication between funeral directors and families while planning a funeral. When my aunt passed away, our funeral director gave us a list of tasks we needed to complete and what he and his team would complete over the next few days. What we found is that our director would reach out to us to check in on our status — asking if we completed the rough draft for the obituary, if he had received the death certificate, etc. – and each time it was an inefficient use of everyone’s time. It was a constant string of missed calls or interruptions. Looking at it from the family point of view, it’s stressful when you’re waiting around for more information to progress. It’s also overwhelming for funeral directors who are juggling multiple families at once and trying to give each client their undivided attention.
• What do you wish people knew about planning a funeral? I want people to know that it is a tough, tiring process but in the end everything is going to be okay, and your funeral director is there for you. You need to trust that even if things aren’t going exactly as planned, everything will come together in the end.
• What do you think is the hardest part about planning a funeral? The hardest part about planning a funeral is pulling everything together in a short period of time and making sure you haven’t forgotten anything in the process. There are many moving pieces that have to come together after a loved one has passed, people often do not realize the amount of work that has to go into planning.
• What is the best piece of advice you can share with people planning a funeral? The best piece of advice I would like to share with everyone out there is to do things that remember and honor your loved one’s life. While it might seem unorthodox to others, it will help bring you closure and comfort at the end of the process.
